MATCH REPORT

Resilient Shooting Stars Secure Hard-Fought Point in Benin Thriller

We displayed grit, character, and resilience on the road, earning a valuable 1-1 draw against Bendel Insurance in a tense Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) encounter in Benin. The clash delivered everything, early goals, tactical battles, and late drama, keeping fans on the edge until the final whistle.

Early Fireworks

We wasted no time making our mark in Benin, as Ismail Ayodele broke the deadlock in just the 5th minute, calmly finishing off a clever assist from Tijani Kabir. The early strike sent a statement of intent, but the hosts quickly responded. Bendel Insurance’s Oweilayefa struck in the 12th minute to restore parity, setting the stage for a pulsating contest.

We looked lively in attack throughout the first half, while our skipper Ghali Falke marshaled the backline with composure. His crucial goal-line clearance denied Insurance a second goal, ensuring both sides went into halftime locked at 1-1.

Tactical Adjustments

Head Coach Nurudeen Aweroro rang the changes to inject energy and sharpen our attack. Returning from CHAN Eagles duty, goalkeeper Mustapha “Black Spider” Lawal was handed his first start of the season, bringing a commanding presence between the posts.

The second half saw key tactical switches: Utin made way for Okon at halftime, while Ayodele Ismail and Adebayo Abayomi were replaced by Ayobami Junior and Chidiebere Nnachi in the 55th minute. The changes brought fresh momentum, but Bendel Insurance’s defense held firm against our waves of attack.

Black Spider’s Heroics

With the game hanging in the balance, Bendel Insurance pressed hard for a late winner. But our “Black Spider” rose to the occasion. In the 89th and 92nd minutes, Mustapha Lawal pulled off two breathtaking saves, ensuring we returned to Ibadan with a precious point.

Looking Ahead

The 1-1 draw means we are still chasing our first win of the 2024/25 NPFL campaign, but our performance in Benin was filled with promise, from tactical discipline to standout individual displays.

As we gear up for Matchday 3 at home, one thing is clear: we are building momentum, and with resilience like this, victory is only a matter of time.
